Networks
By Bob McCarthy
Peter Drucker is quoted as saying,"business has only two basic functions marketing and innovation."
The theme this issue is networking, which the dictionary defines as "the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups or institutions." Effective networking helps businesses market and innovate, and our region offers numerous opportunities to make contacts and exchange ideas.
Whether it's the after-hours socials where flesh is pressed and business cards swapped, the women-only membership of the WBOA, the local Ad Club and their recent affiliation with a national group, or the option for small-and-medium-size companies to loom large via video conferencing, the theme is trading information, opportunities, problems and possibilities.
We, too, provide a forum for trading information. This magazine is becoming the forum for exchanging information among small-and-medium-size businesses. The resources may be local, regional, or national, but they are given a voice here because they are of interest to, or can be of benefit to, our readers.
Obviously, advertising which is across the proverbial aisle from editorial helps businesses market their products and services. But innovation comes from ideas, from discourse, from providing a forum wherein business owners, managers, consultants and employees can share their ideas, ideas that may find a home and beneficial application across town or across the state.
In the months to come, the theme for each issue will change, but within these pages departments and features alike will be dedicated to helping businesses market and innovate.
